Impacts of Electricity Outages in Urban Households in Developing Countries: A Case of Accra, Ghana

Many developing countries in Africa face a “double tragedy” when it comes to electrification. Electricity access rates are low, while those who have electricity frequent outages. There ongoing efforts aimed at increasing on the continent. However, need improve reliability of supply receives limited attention. Unreliable impacts users by limiting utilization and benefits that should accrue from having an connection. Using data 496 household survey questionnaires, this study examines outages urban households Accra, Ghana. The applies correlation regression analyses identify which characteristics associated with or predict reporting outage impacts. Outages were found impact safety/security, food, social services cause appliance damage as well. Factors significantly correlated certain include respondent’s annual income employment status, frequency outages, size. Significant predictors socioeconomic disadvantage, high exposure living large family setting. study’s findings underscore for interventions eliminate, least minimize, interruptions if sustainable economic development is be achieved.
